What is Thermage®?

Thermage is a safe, non-invasive procedure that’s clinically proven to help tighten and contour your skin. Its unique deep-heating technology stimulates and renews your own collagen, resulting in tighter, smoother skin.

Thermage is completely non-invasive – no surgery or injections. Unlike lasers, Thermage works on all skin types and tones. The procedure is typically performed in a single session. And there’s little to no downtime – so you can quickly resume your normal routine.

How Does Thermage Work?

To understand how Thermage works, it helps to know a little about how your skin works.

The skin is made up of three distinct layers: a visible outer layer on the surface called the epidermis, a collagen-rich underlayer beneath the surface called the dermis, and an inner layer beneath the dermis called the subcutaneous layer (also known as the fat layer) that has a web of collagen fibers running through it.

As you age, collagen in these three layers break down and your skin begins to sag and wrinkle. Naturally, treatments that work on just the surface can’t do anything to restore the collagen in the dermis or the inner subcutaneous layer of your skin.

Thermage is the only non-invasive procedure available that tightens and renews your skin’s collagen in all three layers. How? Thermage’s unique Capacitive Radiofrequency (CRF) technology safely heats your skin’s underlayer and the web of collagen in the inner layer, causing an immediate tightening as well as improved tone and texture. The improvements will continue and become even more noticeable for four to six months following treatment, due to new collagen growth.

The Treatment Procedure

During the treatment, you’ll feel a brief, heat sensation each time Thermage delivers energy to the underlayer of your skin. This indicates that your collagen is being stimulated and tightened. Diane S. Berson is an Associate Professor of Dermatology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and an Assistant Attending Dermatologist at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital. She has a private dermatology practice in NYC, and volunteers at the NY Presbyterian Hospital Department of Dermatology where she teaches medical students and residents. Dr. Berson received her undergraduate degree from Cornell University’s College of Arts and Sciences where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She pursued her medical education at New York University School of Medicine. This was followed by an internship in internal medicine at Bellevue Hospital, NYU Medical Center, and a residency in dermatology at State University of New York Health Science Center in Brooklyn where she served as Chief resident during her final year of training. She was certified by the American Board of Dermatology in 1988.

Dr. Berson’s practice focuses on medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology and cutaneous oncology. She also has an interest in the treatment of acne, particularly in adults. Dr. Berson has conducted clinical trials and published articles concerning the treatment of acne and rosacea and other dermatological topics. She has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, and many magazines including Allure, In Style, Town and Country, Health, Real Simple, Fitness, Self, Good Housekeeping, Glamour, W and more. She has also been interviewed often in the media, including NBC’s Today Show, The CBS Early Show, ABC World News Tonight, CNN Headline News, MSNBC, Fox News and local news networks. She lectures regularly at national dermatology conferences. Dr. Berson is on the editorial boards of Practical Dermatology, Journal of Drugs in Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery.

Dr. Berson is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Dermatology. She is the Past President of the Women’s Dermatologic Society, and served on its Board of Directors and the Executive, Legacy, Awards, and Fundraising committees. She also served on the Board of Directors of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the Medical Council of the Skin Cancer Foundation, the Board of Trustees of the Dermatology Foundation, and is a Founding Board Member of both The American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery and the American Acne and Rosacea Society. Dr. Berson is a media spokesperson for The American Academy of Dermatology and was elected to the American Dermatological Association. She is also a member of the President’s Council of Cornell Women and the Cornell University Council.

EMILY LEBOWITZ LUKS, MD

Dr. Lebowitz earned a B.A. from Cornell University and received her medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College. She then completed her internal medicine internship at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. Dr. Lebowitz returned to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center for her dermatology residency training, where she served as Chief Resident and received a Distinguished Housestaff award in her final year.

Dr. Lebowitz has published articles on various dermatological topics in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Dermatologic Surgery, Dermatological Reviews, and the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. She is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and serves on the Community Service & Public Education Committee of the Women's Dermatologic Society.

Dr. Lebowitz's practice includes medical dermatology, dermatologic surgery, laser therapy, and cosmetic procedures. She has a particular interest in complex medical dermatology.
